Your reference number is the key to everything: checking your bill online, paying through JazzCash or Easypaisa, and complaining about any problem. But what if you have lost it? Do not worry — your reference number never changes, and there are several easy ways to find it again. Here is how.

1. Check an Old Paper Bill or Its Photo

The fastest way. The reference number is printed near the top of every electricity bill — a 14-digit number for most companies, 13 digits for K-Electric. Dig out any old bill from a drawer, or check your phone gallery: many people photograph their bill to pay it later. One old bill is enough, because the number never changes. If you find it, you can immediately check your FESCO bill online with it.

2. Search Your SMS Inbox

When you pay a bill through JazzCash, Easypaisa or a bank app, you get an SMS receipt that often includes the reference or consumer number. Search your messages for words like “bill”, “LESCO”, “IESCO” or “reference”. Old payment confirmations from months ago wi

5. Call Your Company’s Helpline

Every distribution company has a helpline (for example, LESCO 118, and similar numbers for other companies). Call them, give your CNIC number and address, and they can tell you your reference number after verifying your identity. Keep your CNIC handy when you call. This works even if you have never seen a bill for the connection.

6. Visit the Local Office With Your CNIC

If the helpline cannot help, visit your area’s customer service centre with your original CNIC. The staff can look up your connection by name and address and give you the reference number on the spot. Take a photo of it immediately so you never lose it again.

7. Meter Number Is Not the Reference Number

Many people confuse the two. The meter number is printed on the physical meter box outside your home and identifies the hardware. The reference number identifies your billing account. You cannot check or pay your bill with just the meter number — you need the reference number. When you look at an old bill, make sure you copy the number labelled “Reference No”, not the meter number.

Once You Find It, Check Your Bill Right Away

Now put the number to work. Enter it in our free MEPCO bill checker (or select your own company on our homepage) to see your latest bill, its due date and the payable amount. You can also check your TESCO bill online the same way. If the name on the bill is wrong or the units look strange, read our guide on how to read your electricity bill to understand every section.

Keep It Safe From Now On

Save the reference number in your phone’s notes app, take a photo of one bill and keep it in your gallery, and share it with one trusted family member. Your reference number never changes, so this one-time effort saves you trouble every month for years.

Losing your reference number feels like a big problem, but as you have seen, it takes only a few minutes to recover. Find it once, save it properly, and checking your bill online becomes a 30-second job every month.

ll still have the number.

3. Check Your Email for E-Bills

If you ever registered for e-billing, your company emails you a PDF bill every month. Search your inbox for your company’s name. The PDF has the reference number printed on it, and you can save it for future use.

4. Ask Your Landlord or Previous Tenant

If you rent your home, the landlord or a previous tenant has definitely paid the bill before. Ask them for the reference number or a photo of any old bill. Housing societies and building managers also keep these records.
